Katie Glassman’s love affair with the fiddle began at the tender age of nine. Inspired by old-time Texas music, she began playing by ear, and was soon winning numerous honors throughout the West. In 1998, she captured the National Junior Fiddle Championship in Weiser, Idaho, and two years later the National Young Adult Fiddle Championship. She is a three- time top five finalist in the National Grand Champion Division and in 2011, she won the National Western Stock Show Championship. 2013 was Katie’s biggest year yet for competing, as she took top honors in two of the country’s most prestigious contests: Walnut Valley, in Winfield, Kansas, and Rockygrass in Lyons, CO.

But Katie is no one trick pony when it comes to fiddling. She studied classical and jazz violin at the University of Colorado in Boulder, graduating with a BA in music performance and a certificate in jazz studies. In 2007 she became only the second American to attend the Centre Musique Didier Lockwood in France, the world’s foremost jazz violin school.

Greg Schochet is a full-time performer, teacher and producer in Boulder, Colorado. Equally adept on guitar and mandolin, he is fluent in number of acoustic and electric styles, including bluegrass, swing, and country.

A veteran of many touring and recording bands, his love of music and traveling has brought him to some of the most acclaimed venues in the country, including A Prairie Home Companion, Red Rocks, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, as well as the Rainforest World Music Festival in Malaysia.

Born and raised in the suburbs of New York city, Greg’s musical youth was framed by his father’s record collection and FM radio of the 70s and 80s. Combined with a deep love for all things traditional, twangy and old-timey, Greg’s musical sensibilities are wide-ranging and versatile.

He is an integral part of Colorado’s thriving roots music scene, and is a sought after instructor, session player, producer and collaborator.

Colorado Ladies Collaborate to Produce Calamity Jane Ale & Spirit…again!

150 150 City Star Brewing

Once again, the women of City Star Brewing and Spirit Hound Distillers teamed up to brew a fresh batch of Calamity Jane. In the spirit of International Women’s Day in March, the gals got together, rolled up their sleeves and brewed a sahti-inspired ale. The week prior, the ladies harvested Rocky Mountain Juniper boughs and berries outside of Lyons, Colorado for the brew. The boughs were used as a lauter (filter) for the mash, and 1 pound of juniper berries were added to the boil. A variety of malted barley and Saaz hops were also added to this beer. The result is a red ale with no hop bitterness, and a pleasant earthy flavor reminiscent of a Spring hike in the Rocky Mountains. The brew rings in at 6.5% ABV and beckons you for another pour.

Two kegs are on their way to Spirit Hound Distillers in Lyons for spirit distillation, soon to be known as Pearl Pistol. Stay tuned for the release of this spirit later this summer!

Women Brew Beer

August 25, 2016
Berthoud, Colorado

On International Womens Day, March 8th, women across the world brewed together for the Pink Boots Society’s Big Brew Day, raising the profile of women in the industry and raising the profile of beer to women. The City Star Brewing and Spirit Hound Distillers ladies brewed Calamity Jane, gose inspired ale with pink Himalayan sea salt, coriander and tart cherries at City Star.

In further collaboration the ladies distilled 2 kegs of Calamity Jane at Spirit Hound, producing just under 1 gallon of Calamity Jane Spirit. The finished product weighs in at 90 proof, featuring a floral brandy nose that leads to a taste of roses on the palate. There is  hint of malt and long lingering heat finish. Calamity Jane Spirit is a truly one-of-a-kind, delicate spirit and supply is extremely limited.

The fruits of their labor will be unveiled at the Calamity Jane Release Party at Lyons Fork on Thursday, September 1st 5-8pm. The final keg available of Calamity Jane Ale will be on tap. Due to the very limited supply of Calamity Jane Spirit it will only be available for sale at this event with purchase of a tasting ticket, and it is expected to completely sell out that night.
