The latest in City Star’s Barrel Aged Series will be released in the City Star taproom on Saturday, May 6th: Troubadour, a brown ale aged 3 months in KJ Wood Distillers whiskey oak barrels. KJ Wood once was located in Berthoud, but relocated to Ouray, Colorado in recent years. The caramel notes in this beer work rhythmically with the whiskey flavors of the barrels. Colorado Ladies Collaborate to Produce Calamity Jane Ale & Spirit…again!

150 150 City Star Brewing

Once again, the women of City Star Brewing and Spirit Hound Distillers teamed up to brew a fresh batch of Calamity Jane. In the spirit of International Women’s Day in March, the gals got together, rolled up their sleeves and brewed a sahti-inspired ale. The week prior, the ladies harvested Rocky Mountain Juniper boughs and berries outside of Lyons, Colorado for the brew. The boughs were used as a lauter (filter) for the mash, and 1 pound of juniper berries were added to the boil. A variety of malted barley and Saaz hops were also added to this beer. The result is a red ale with no hop bitterness, and a pleasant earthy flavor reminiscent of a Spring hike in the Rocky Mountains. The brew rings in at 6.5% ABV and beckons you for another pour.

Two kegs are on their way to Spirit Hound Distillers in Lyons for spirit distillation, soon to be known as Pearl Pistol. Stay tuned for the release of this spirit later this summer!

A pickin’ and a grinnin’ and a drinkin’ in Berthoud

JD Hegan, beer slinger for City Star Brewing.

Let’s hear it for those City Star Workers,” The Stanleytones singer said to a packed house last Saturday night, and the people obliged the man behind the banjo. They were a delightfully pleasant bunch, 50 or so locals who came out on this frigid January evening to listen to some live bluegrass and enjoy a pint or three. One couple even got up and danced, which many people stood by and politely watched, waiting for the exuberant couple to dance their way away from the bathroom door they were blocking.

If this was a bar in Denver, Boulder or even Fort Collins, there is no doubt that an impatient patron would have rudely interrupted the couple’s clogging to relieve themselves, but up here in Berthoud, the people are a little more relaxed and a little more hospitable. And thank goodness for that because it was Saturday night and there wasn’t a seat to be had. The Stanleytones had just gotten warm and no one was clearing out anytime soon. The bartender took pity on us and cleared her dinner from a table in the back and allowed us to take up residence next to the walk-in cooler — which featured a photo of a glaring Christopher Walken with the caption: “Close the Walken!” We were right at home.

As my associate poked her way through City Star’s collection of board games, I procured the brews for the evening: 10 samples of City Star’s offerings: five mainstays — Cowboy’s Golden (5% ABV), Local Yokel pale ale (6%), All American IPA (6.5%), Red Necktar (6.5%) and Bandit Brown (5.5%); and five seasonals — Night Watchman (6%), Raspberry Bandit (6%), Chai Watchman (6%), Mule Kick (9%) and Widowmaker (11.5%).

Red Necktar and Bandit Brown are standouts, but it’s those dark delicious seasonals that make City Star worth the trip. The Night Watchman stout has less heft and more bouquet, which favors dark chocolate and coffee in a delightful aroma that smells a little like a Christmas dessert, while the Chai Watchman ups the ante with cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom and a whole lot of vanilla beans. That’s quite a punch in one glass. Ditto for Mule Kick, a strong ale brewed with Colorado wildflower honey that hybrids the best qualities of beer and wine into one deliciously dark draught.

After we finished our flights and a few rounds of Scruples, we decided to hit the dusty trail, but not before a visit to the facilities. There, in the hallway adjacent to the bar, are a series of historical photographs of Berthoud throughout the years. While we admired a bird’s eye view of the town, a local approached us and asked if we were out-of-towners and gave us a couple of suggestions of which bars to drink at and where we could sleep it off. As she bid us good luck and returned to the stomp and twag of the music, I made a decision right then and there: next time, I’m bringing cowboy boots.

City Star Brews Local Yokel Pale Ale with NoCo Malt and Hops

150 150 City Star Brewing

rootshoot-malting-8October 21, 2016
Berthoud, Colorado

It’s fresh, it’s LOCAL, it’s City Star Brewing’s first test batch of Local Yokel! The American Pale Ale will be released in City Star Brewing’s downtown Berthoud taproom on October 22nd. Local Yokel is brewed with locally sourced ingredients: whole leaf dried Chinook and Cascade hops from Colorado Hop Company, grown just north of Fort Collins and barley grown and malted in Loveland at Root Shoot Malting. The easy drinking brew showcases the grain and hop bill with citrus notes and a light bitterness, finishing at 6% and 40 IBU.

Each year City Star Brewing and other Colorado craft breweries brew with Colorado grown fresh hops during the annual harvest. Head brewer John Way takes this local collaboration a step further by sourcing a year’s supply of dried locally grown hops, “Local Yokel will be a hyper local ale, brewed year round. This beer will feature ingredients grown within a 60 mile radius of our Berthoud taproom”. At the heart of the Local Yokel recipe is Root Shoot Malting’s pale malt, barley grown in our backyard and malted at the start-up’s brand new state-of-the-art facility in Loveland, Colorado.

City Star Brewing will be calling all local yokels to offer feedback on the beer so the brewhouse can mash and churn test batches, formulating the ultimate local ale. Comment cards will be distributed during the release to include folks in the decision making process to formulate the finished product.

Local Yokel Test Batch 1 will be released in the City Star taproom on Saturday, October 22nd at 12pm. The G Spot food truck will be serving out front at 5pm, and a local bluegrass duo plays at 7pm.
